Lets lighten the mood…

WITH COMICS! Regarding the last post, I was feeling kinda annoyed at myself with everything I try to do to be nothing but a lazy half-attempt at things, but lets push that aside for now as things in my life are starting to look up one again.

For one, I’ve been working on a server, it’ not finished but I am (although slowly) progressing. Learning the in’s and out’s of Linux server, customizing settings, adding software, web programming and web design. I have nothing to show for those though as I’m going over all aspects of the web language, such as HTML, XHTML, the cleaner version of HTML, CSS and JavaScript for neat effects, Ajax and PHP for server-side scripting for a blog system and… stuff that I have planned. In the meantime, I have been working with Mumble, the VoIP client for gaming and have found it to be a LOT better than Ventrilo, or even Skype (Skype was more private, that’s why it was used.) so it’s all good.

Another thing that has started to look up is the college I attend, recently I’ve had an important tutor leave to progress with another contract he has been offered for work he would like to do. Fair enough, if you found an opportunity at hand and you want it, why not take it? So good luck to him. The head-of-school hadn’t been able to get a substitute in time though due to certain unforeseen reasons… I won’t mention them cause I don’t want to seem troublesome and stuff, so he’s decided to step in and start teaching us. He was originally the head-of-course, and I’ve heard from many others and small observations that he is quite the people person. He doesn’t force work on us, he uses his own methods which eventually lead to work being handed out, only to find out that the stuff he taught us WAS the work that we’re required to do. Basically, he teaches us the works, makes us have fun, gives us a sheet with the work on and we found out that we just did it at that moment in time. The guy is also an expert programmer, which is definitely something I’m going to enjoy when we get round to it. I CAN SEE IT NOW!

So yeah, basically, things are gonna be great. If you still haven’t got the reason as to WHY I’m feeling better also, it’s because I’m motivated, that and I just downed some coffee. Sweet, sweet, coffee. Anyways, enough talking, lemme suggest some comics for you guys to read. Most of these comics involve anthropomorphic animals, anthropomorphic for those who don’t know is giving humanistic features (the ability to talk, walk on two legs, etc) to anything, YES ANYTHING. If you don’t like that kind of thing then feel free to not check it out, you stupid unimaginative bastard fellow manly / womanly person. (Ones that involve Anthropomorphism are marked with an asterisks *)

* Bear Nuts – This comic is about bears in a zoo, it’s not boring trust me! The bears are wacky, have random encounters and adventures and are sort of like a set of demented care bears. Check it out, you’ll have a good laugh. Updates Mondays and now every other Fridays!

* Sandra and Woo – This comic is a cutesy sort of one, but not AWWWCUUUUTE, just kid like with some adult jokes also. It’s about a girl and her talking raccoon that she adopted, also very amusing. Updates Mondays and Thursdays.

Penny Arcade – If you don’t know what this comic is, then you don’t deserve to be on the internet. It’s a comic about video games, but it’s the ORIGINAL comic about video games. Spanned over a thousand pages over the years, it’s great to look at and get a laugh if you enjoy games and technology. I have no idea what days this updates on, even after reading through it all, but it updates every week.

Megatokyo – Everyone knows Megatokyo, why don’t you? (If you do, regard that statement), done in a manga style by an America, the comic takes place in Japan when the two main protagonists, Piro and Largo have to get out of the country because of an incident at a games expo. The story is slightly all over the place but it is an enjoyable read. This comic updates randomly, best way to keep up is to follow the facebook group or twitter.

* Lackadaisy – This comic is about cats during the depression era, with brilliant characters, art and story, this is definitely a comic you need to check out. It usually updates every month with a couple of pages but you’ll have to check now and then or on twitter as well to keep up to date.

* Housepets! – A comic about a friendly neighbourhood, with talking animals. Pretty amusing and fun to read. Updates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Questionable Content – This comic is sort of a slice-of-life comic, not based on actual events or anything it does go over the life of a guy and his friends. This comic updates every day except for weekends and has many mature-themed jokes. Do check it out.

* Slightly Damned – Everyone dies, that’s life, we either go to heaven or hell (if you believe in religion) when you die also, but for the protagonist of this story, Rhea, she’s faced with an equal life balance when she confronts Death in judgement, sending her to the realm of the slightly damned. I won’t give away any of the story but it is amusing to read. Updates every Saturday, if not Saturday then usually Sunday. (The author has a busy life at the moment)

* Digger – This comic, oh man, this comic is brilliant. It’s about a dead god and a wombat. The story is something you’d expect to read in a Terry Pratchet book and the art is fantastic, you should check it out for a better insight. Updates Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* The Whiteboard – What do you get when you mix guns, animals and lots ‘n lots of fun? No, not Avatar, a comic about paintball of course! This has gone on for many years and is very amusing. The guy himself who does the comic is a huge paintball fanatic who has created his own business based on paintball, infact, the main character, Doc, is an avatar of him basically, although not a full insertion. Well worth checking out. Updates Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

* Kinokofry – I stumbled upon this comic somehow but it’s pretty amusing. Being another random comic like Eegra or Raymondo Person it’s a pretty fun read. Not sure when it updates.

* Over  the Hedge – Everyone should know basically what Over the Hedge is, if you’ve seen the film then you know half of what it is about, the comic however, was originally about the raccoon, the turtle and the squirrel themselves, and it’s not about going over the hedge but rather small adventures and stuff. Fun to read, updates every day.

Awkward Zombie – THIS COMIC IS FUNNY AND YOU SHOULD LIKE IT, it’s about games… but it’s funny. Updates randomly, just check the site now and then..

Eegra – Is comic is about random things, and I mean random things. I’m not kidding, it’s also hilarious. It only just started to update again but it doesn’t really have a schedule so just check it out.

Raymondo Person – Done by the guy who does Eegra, this comic is about a guy named Raymondo as he goes on with his ever so strange life of his, also random, but hilarious. Unaware of when it updates, I think it’s on a hiatus.

* Inverloch – This comic finished a while back but is still one of the best fantasy themed comics I’ve read. I can’t explain it that well cause it’s that good, also, I’d be giving away important parts of the story, so just take my word for it (and your curiosity) and check it out. You can’t go wrong with this one!

Whew! Many comics, hope you’ll check them out and get hooked like me.

For better, or not so good…

Greetings everyone, for those that are very observant may notice that the theme has changed for my blog. I like the style and design of it all and I think it sorta goes well with the type of stuff I write, unfortunately, the quality and the content of the writing is still dull as always. I lack the ability to write good posts, and the time to simple write a thought, an idea or even a hello once a week.

It’s not exactly hard or challenging, there are people that program computers, design graphics and games, build houses, etc. We take a step back and examine these things and think “Wow, that must of taken ages” or “I bet that is a hard task to do” but in reality, is it? I saw in a comment on a site I look at [Lifehacker] talking about how one decided to tackle and hustle the things he wanted to do, it involved programming, managing a blog, learning the components of how blogging software worked and a few other things. The commenter himself was also a programmer, and gets all sorts of people saying what I said above, he always responds with “Can your Gran / Mom / whoever knit? Mine can, things take time and practice.”

Now, everyone knows things take a lot of practice and well partitioned time, but for some reason we push it aside, I know I do and I do it way too much. I have dreams, ambitions that I can take an idea of mine, a story, game idea, website design, the sorts, and actually turn it into something that at first won’t be great but definitely become something I could build upon even more, which then I could share with others so that they may build upon it also. Much like open-source software, but I want it to be inspiring, to tell others that you don’t need a lot to be successful nor that it is actually that hard when you put your mind to it. Alas, these are words, I’ve yet to actually get anywhere and all I can say to myself is “It’s easier to say than it is to do.”

We were all put in this world with a starting purpose of life, which is to live (or 42, haha), but it is not enough, nothing will ever be enough when we stay to that purpose. Perhaps it’s time for us to stop and think what we would actually like to achieve in our lives, what we want our purposes to be, not to leave it to fate to decide for you. I would like to say to everyone, even myself, is what we do enough? When you say you’re going to give it your all, are you really? We’re advancing in the future more quickly that ever, it’s time that we took what we wish we could do and actually set your life ambition to it, forget the past, we could have done better in the past now that we look at it, whether it be grades or whatever and set ourselves down to actually get on with something.

It’s never an easy task, but we could take what we learnt and share it with others, whether it be ideas, skills or even problems, never the worst, there is no such thing as the worst, just like there is no such thing as a stupid question or a stupid answer, it’s either for the better… or the not so good… and we can build upon those results.

Just a thought…

Another day, another year…

So I didn’t write the blog entry I said I was going to do, laziness, go figure, regardless it’s 2010 and I’m up to making a commitment to update more regularly and to get down to work with my many projects so expect some updates on them soon.

Incase you don’t know or I’ve forgot to mention them, the projects include a game, two comics and an animation, expect the early stuff within one or two months and demos about half way through the year (it sounds silly but I will try, I WILL BEAT THE POWERS TO BE).

Anyways, I understand that a few people are interested in the stuff that they read here because it’s funny, perhaps interesting aswell, unfortunately a few posts of mine and few posts in the future don’t exactly that that kind of content in them, I apoligise somewhat, but a blog is then a place to rant about thoughts and stuff whether it’s funny or not, SO, I ask you, the readers, to give me topics, anything you hate or love, and I will write it in the way you want it, of course, not entirely, I will add my own personal touch to it :P

Aaaaand… I got nothing else to say for now, but I do have a game review for tomorrow, and the second part  to the last blog entry will be posted perhaps on the same day, in other news, I should be getting my new graphics tablet tomorrow so woot! Time to get my art game on!

Wonders & Magic: P1

Quick note before hand, previous posts will be checked over for grammar, spelling and structure, so that it doesn’t look like a bunch of crap a ten year old could have wrote by grabbing words from a hat and throwing them onto paper… like, you know, bad writers do. Another thing, sometime after the new year I’m resetting up a private web server of mine, it’ll be the host of all my projects and stuff, which means that this blog may be migrating over, I’m still deciding however, whether to completely destroy this blog or keep it as a backup. That is all.

Now, updates! The title actually suits this post as I’m talking about none other than the most visually stunning film I have ever seen, Avatar. I also have another thing in mind but this first!

Avatar, the 2009 film, is the creation of the sloppy romance film maker James Cameron, who created the OH SO LOVABLE film, Titanic. Hopefully that hasn’t put you off the idea of going to watch it because it really is a fantastic film, but as a fair critic I must also express some bad points about this film, and they’re not hard to come by in this, believe me. What is this film about anyway? Well, lemme just say that it’s not that damn cartoon from Nickelodeon, no no, this film was planned many years before the cartoon and had been in production just 4 years ago, this film is about a simple fella named Jake Sully, who’s twin brother had passed away unfortunately which caused the search for a replacement, thus, he was contacted to take place in a project on a planet called “Pandora”. The project is called “The Avatar Project”. An ‘Avatar’ is a lab-grown being tied to ones genetic code that allows that person to take control of this huge, blue anthropomorphic like being known as a Na’vi, Jake Sully has a disability, he has a problem with his legs so he can’t walk on them but when he finally gets to use them when controlling the avatar for the first time ever, finds that it becomes quite an enjoyable experience, soon after, he is sent on his first mission with someone named is Grace (Protrayed by Sigourney Weaver, the woman in Holes if you watched that film). Unfortuately, while out collecting samples for the lab on Pandora a problem occurs, separating Jake from his team. If you want to know more, read wikipedia or go see the film, the blank spaces are spoilers so highlight them only if you want to find out.

OKAY, now the reviewing, so what exactly makes this film good? Well, as I stated in the beginning, this film will probably be one of the most visually stunning things you’ll ever see, from the ships, to the lab on Pandora, to the planet Pandora itself, the Na’vi and even the creatures that lurk on Pandora, everything looks abso-fucking-lutely b-e-a-utiful. Of course, such a thing should come from the most expensive film so far, it all looks more stunning in 3d as well. Another good point, the story, it’s simple, enjoyable and has both the romance and action, although the romance isn’t as sloppy as Titanic (thank fur),  the next thing, the 3d. If you have yet to see a film in 3d then perhaps this should be your first, it adds to the overall movie experience and really helps to drag you into it all, at some points I almost felt as if I was standing there at certain scenes, being the camera guy or even an actor, the way it adds depth to it all is also pretty impressive, with full colour and all! (No damn red and blue)

And thus ends my good points, now, for the bad stuff… this film is way to predictable, I mean REALLY predictable, from the beginning you’re gonna get the general gist of what happens, and at certain points you won’t even try much effort to guess cause you’re gonna be right anyway. This whole predictable action and drama is seen as the biggest downside to this film, but let me tell you this, if you’re gonna pay to sit somewhere and just take a guess at what’s going to happen instead of trying to sit back, relax and enjoy moving pictures then, well, maybe you should go work as a fortune teller. That’s the only thing that pisses me off, people try to think, and guess, and not enjoy stuff anymore, it’s all graphics and stuff, not much interest in the story anymore, which brings me onto my next point…

The story, I said the story was good, yes, but it also suffers from major problems, the fast moving brings you ahead in time too fast, one day it’s the 3rd, the next it could be the 14th, that’s an example, the story also follows a basic protagonist-action-love-happy ending formula that has been used many, MANY times, it kinda sucks and I wish they’d create something new sometimes, there’s hardly any background to the whole thing either, but then we are placed in the middle of the colonization of this planet, BUT DON’T LET THIS BRING YOU TO A CONCLUSION, it’s not a bad film, honest :D

The next problem, and final, are the characters, overall, they’re enjoyable, quirky and will indeed make you laugh and put a smile on your face, but aside from that, if you’re looking for a background to the overall characters, a bit of depth from the whole 2d-ness, then, unfortunately, you’re stumped again. We only know names, not age or… infact, anything, it’s pretty disappointing, but eh, it’s up to you whether you wanted all the detail stuff in a film which could eventually lead to the loss of a lot of the action perhaps.

Aaaand, that’s a wrap, that’s my review on Avatar in as much depth as I can possibly give, I could probably give a lot more detail in person or in 1-to-1 but eh, no one ever bothers with contacting me and such so I’ll just leave this here. Overall, I’d give this film a 4/5 still, it’s still very enjoyable and should definitely be seen by all, after all, a film isn’t exactly going to have any negativity on your life.

Newbies + Faggots = …

…something that isn’t to do with gay people. AHOY MAYTES, it’s that time again when I actually update as I had planned, of course I have nothing to write about really that may be of interest… but I do have something I’d like to share.

It’s a dream, a dream of wonders and magic COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT, seriously, I’ve been having random dreams lately and I kid you not, they are random. Not stuff that people throw into MSPaint and call random, not those shitty sprite comics random, not Hitler being resurrected again random but complete and original random.

It begins with a town, a town of… nothing, there were a few shops but if you tried to go into them the doors just turned into flat walls like in Half Life 2 or something, I try door after door with no luck so I decided to wander around else where. I turn around to start and the location had changed… I was in a woods, a forest, something with loads of trees, rocks and a waterfall… it was weird, ALL OF THE SUDDEN! I answer my phone, it wasn’t ringing or anything so I don’t know how I knew someone was on the line but on the other end was my friend Jack, he asked me to use my card to buy a pizza from Just-Eat.co.uk, I said okay and gave him the details.

I hung up, turn around and walk the other direction, I walk for a few seconds until I hear a voice from behind… I turn around and it’s some guy in a white and red shirt with black jeans, he was also holding a package… a pizza… he delivered a pizza to me in the middle of nowhere even though I didn’t order it… he then went on about late delivery and some crap about delivery charge so I just ignored him, took the pizza and walked away. I took a peek behind me to see if he was still there but he was gone, I look down in front of me and the pizza…. IT’S GONE. God, fucking, dammit. Now here’s where it gets even more weird (and amusing).

I look back up and I’m at a house… a party, eh? Jack was there and so was another one of my friends, Pete is his name. It apparently was his house and he allowed us to stay over, so after a 5 second party (best party ever) we decide to head off to sleep, only we couldn’t because we kept laughing. Why were we laughing? Well, in this room was a record player with a speed switch on it, Pete had put some music on (don’t ask cause it was nothing, just random noises and jibberish) and I kept messing with the speed, it then turned into a high pitched sped up piece of shit that kept us laughing for ages, sort of like if you were high you’d just laugh at anything.

I closed my eyes at one moment from all the laughing and then reopened them, we were in a barracks… a military barracks during WW2 time, the hell? I looked out of a window behind me and saw… the French… ‘Oh god’ I thought, which eventually turned into a ‘Oh shit’ as I looked to the right of me, there was a British flag beside me and I could feel I was going to be killed for not being French (I don’t even know), so I took down the flag, put up a French one, and then some guy walks in. He questions me about the British flag, like who’s was it, so I pointed to some guy across the room and said it was his… the guy then wondered how he got such a flag into the base, I told him I didn’t know and should try thinking hard… I got a reply of ‘Maybe he snuck it in with it stuffed up his ass’, laughter soon followed from us all.

Then things got serious, he question my authority or business within the French army… I had no idea how I got here or why things are turning out like this so I just picked a random job from the air… ‘Technology’, ‘TECHNOLOGY!?’ he replied, I was scared, I was screwed… or so I thought. ‘We we’re looking for the tech guys, we need our computers fixed promptly cause it ain’t switching on.’, huh? ‘Did you try turning it on and off again?’ I said, he chuckled, ‘Come on, lemme show you to the tech room’ and then lead me, Jack and Pete there, who both said nothing during the whole time, infact, it’s like they just disappeared…

Anyway, enter the room we do, I was expecting cheap stuff, basic at best, till I step in… the tech guys were working with modern tower computers, modified to include i5 & i7 processors and a custom version of windows which was a sort of mix of Windows XP and 7, what the hell? Then… THEN… it ended… my alarm woke me up and the whole thing ended… needless to say I was rather disappointed, not only did I just have the most randomest dream I can remember, but it possibly was one of the best also on my list.

So yeah, that’s my dream, do any of you have random dreams that you can remember? I’d like to hear about them if you’d bother to share… and uh, I got nothing else.

I was going to talk about Left4Dead 2 and some random topic about Drink and Cookie thieves but maybe that’ll have to be left for another day.

OSs, Games and More.

Okay, so, today’s post will be a mash up of various different things that have occured over the past 2 weeks and stuff. We have windows 7, left 4 dead 2, borderlands, a gaming expo (eurogamer 2009) and the upcoming game, brink.

Alright, windows 7. You’ve all heard about it, it’s the vista killer despite it being built on vista, I can tell you from usage that it is many times better than vista. The interface of aero is great, although I turned it off for both performance and battery life but it’s still great. Everything works better in compatability terms and drivers and I personally recommend that you get it :P

Next, left 4 dead 2. After preordering and waiting for the valve developers to release the fucking demo early for us it finally arrived, and as expected this is a great game. It has more potential for user created content and the added weapons and monsters make the game even more anticipating (and a lot more fucking harder). If you haven’t preordered the game or are thinking about buying it, I also recommend you getting it. And with it left 4 dead 1, as both games will be supported with addons and user content in the years to come.

Borderlands! I haven’t played the demo or preview because one of the bastards at the expo was some serious big guy that wouldn’t let anyone in, he practically stood infront of the entrance of one of the 18+ sections :( . I also have not preordered it (unfortunately) so I’m afraid I can’t give much of an opinion there, but from the looks of it, it does look like a great game that has managed to put two genres together to work well along with randomly generated content. Yet again, I haven’t played so I guess this will be left to your own opinion.

Euro expo! I attended today with my college amigos the european games expo of 2009, and it was awesome. Previews of the various games to come, sneaking into the 18+ section, free t-shirts (a brink shirt and a mother fucking left 4 dead 2 shirt) and the general annoyance of looking around london for a place to eat (damn layout and lack of signs made it a real bitch to find a mcdonalds).

I never got to play on any of the games as I didn’t really dedicate any waiting time to play them, and quite a few I’ve looked up and played on consoles of my own, but the indie department had games I haven’t seen and wanted to try out (Yes squid! Not so octopus for example, and darwinia+. I loved the original darwinia game :D ).

One great event was the theatre event which the ceo of splash damage came to show everyone the pre alpha of the upcoming game (spring 2010) brink. If you never heard of the game, search it up, if you know about the game, I can tell you that from what I saw, it’s going to be FUCKING AWESOME. In spirit of a good game and a good company, I’m afraid I cannot reveal any information relating to it, but once it is officially announced I can say that you’ll be interested in it.

“So here I was…”

“Bored as hell, waiting for, the fucking bell”, poem or whatever written by someone on a table in an exam I had a while back during school time.

ANYWAY, dear me, it seems that my laziness has kicked in again which caused me to not bother updating my side blog… it also caused me to forget about various assignments I need to do for college… ugh.

Got them written down on notes anyway, I just hope I don’t forget about those either, fjdksjfhdakfjsdkfskd.

Um, um, um, OH YEAH! For anyone who doesn’t know, I like to draw, characters and maybe mini comics, unfortunately my imagination span and drawing skills have become quite limited and I can only draw the same characters over again, and the same thing more than one, on the same page… yeah…. SO, I’m buying a graphics tablet pretty soon to help out with some concept designs for projects that are slowing coming together, and I would like to draw other things aswell.

This may be project work which I might show on my blog (inspired by Zaff’s / Jack’s friend Ikey, also known as drVox), of course, I wouldn’t be able to draw things everyday, or even very regularly, as my talent sucks and I like to reduce myself to a pathetic person who hates his own creations, SO YEAH!

However, I would like to do commissions for any of you readers who may be reading this, the commissions are free as I don’t think selling cheap artwork (see untalented artists) would create trust or friendship or WHATEVER ELSE YOU CALL THAT SHIT. (Trying too hard here, I apologise)

So yeah, anyways, art commissions, project talk and stories which I’m going to plan on putting on here in small sections, like a weekly story thing, y’know?

And I have nothing else to say, off-topic, anyone have steam? Add me, rakienroffo. I have HL2 with episodes, GMod, TF2 and soon, L4D 1 & 2, and maybe Borderlands too if I don’t decide to buy it for 360.

Blow it out your ass.

I saw a thread on 4chan that implied that European > Americans, I also had a picture which went with the title today but that’s on my laptop.

ANYWAY, some news everyone (futurama pun intended), my group of freelance amigos, known as ionArts Design Studios will hopefully be moving forward with a few projects that we have planned. These projects involve games, websites, a comic and maybe some art design and stories (I.e. Typical things that people do in indie work.). Two games. I would like to point out in particular are Project: Moonbeam, an online rpg set in a western steampunk universe, combining science fiction and wild west also, and the second one is GhostMan, a 2d sidescroller metroidvania game which style of action is similar to Metal Slug, except freeroaming.

These projects will be listed and explained in more detail by freelance artist and designer, Zaff. The blog is over here which, is outdated at the moment and will be having a revamp over today and maybe tomorrow.

I have nothing else to mention for today, not even a random comment, so I appologise for not attempting the funny with ranting or whatever stupid shit :D

HAHA SPAM FILTER

My friend, JD (92.238.99.133) and another one of my friends which I can only presume is Zak (68.52.54.50) THOUGHT IT WOULD BE COOL TO TRY AND SPAM MY COMMENTS SECTION, of course, everything these days have a spam filter and ip tracker…

Anyways, another day, another post, I would like to bring up again that I cannot promise posts every so often, or at all… BUT I WILL TRY A SCHEDULE OR SOMETHING, like, once every week… or month. Ahem.

To tell you the truth, I actually have nothing to say, so yeah. Hey, do you like online comics? If so then I recommend checking out Bear Nuts, it’s hilarious and super awesome, go read it now etc etc.
